The Breeders’ Cup World Thoroughbred Championships is happening this weekend, November 4-5th, 2022.
Juveniles run in Friday’s races. Then on Saturday, the best horses from throughout the world head to Keeneland Park for the richest day in American racing.
The 39th Breeders Cup, will feature 14 Championship races and $31 million in prize money. Headlining the $6 million Breeder’s Cup Classic is an unbeaten four-year-old named “Flightline” that landed Del Mar’s Grade-1 TVG Pacific Classic Stakes by 19 lengths. Country Grammer, winner of the Dubai World Cup, came second.
Flightline is a star performer with a rating of 139. Baaeed is rated 135. Flightline won his previous three races by a minimum of 11 lengths. Life Is Good and Epicenter are also in the betting.
Last year Europe had three winners at the meeting. All were trained at Newmarket by Charlie Appleby. Godolphin’s private trainer has a record of six Breeders’ Cup winners from just 11 runners. He will aim to retain the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile Turf title in 2022.
Appleby has a strong squad for the Breeders’ Cup Turf. His horses Nations Pride, Rebel”s Romance and Adayar are all potential winners.
Europe’s chances of winning Breeders’ Cup success do not depend solely on Charlie Appleby. Smaller yards with smaller resources have strong chances. John Quinn’s Highfield Princess has landed four of her last five races. Platinum Queen became the first two-year-old since 1978 to win the Prix de l’Abbaye on l’Arc de Triomphe day. Richard Fahy wants to take his £57,000 purchase stateside to contest the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint. Hollie Doyle could retain the ride.
