What are Preakness Stakes?

The 2022 Preakness Stakes is called also the “Middle Jewel of the Triple Crown.” The Woodlawn Vase, the most valuable prize in American sports, will be awarded at this event. First assessed in 1983 for $1 million, the Woodlawn Vase now is worth more than $4 million and is kept at the Baltimore Museum of Art. It will just be ceremonially presented to the Preakness Stakes 2022 winner this upcoming Saturday, May 21st before being returned to the museum.

Preakness Stakes date and location

The 2022 Preakness Stakes will be held at Pimlico Race Course on Saturday, May 21st. Epicenter is the early favorite in the 2022 Preakness Stakes after finishing second in the Kentucky Derby.

Preakness Stakes Contenders

Secret Oath (11-2), Early Voting (6-1), and Simplification (8-1) are some the horses entered in the 2022 Preakness Stakes. Rich Strike, the 80-1 longshot Kentucky Derby winner, will not be in the Preakness Stakes field in 2022.

Rick Dawson, the owner of Rich Strike, cited an intend to keep the horse healthy and committing Rich Strike to run in the Belmont Stakes in June, the Triple Crown last leg.

He also stated that his team had always intended to give Rich Strike adequate “recovery time” prior to the Belmont, and that the colt’s unexpected qualification and victory at the Derby prompted the decision to pull his horse from the race.

2022 Preakness Stakes expert predictions:

Epicenter

Epicenter is a bay colt trained by Steve Asmussen, one of the top trainers in the horse racing sport. He was one of the favorites to win the Kentucky Derby. His second-place performance and near-victory shows that this horse has a lot of potential. The horse is a favorite heading into Maryland for the final jewel of the Triple Crown.

Secret Oath

The Preakness has produced six fillies, more than the Kentucky Derby (three) and Belmont Stakes (three).

As a three-year-old, Secret Oath dominated all of her races against fillies, winning the Kentucky Oaks, as well as the one-mile Martha Washington Stakes and Honeybee Stakes. However, when it came to racing male horses in the Arkansas Derby, she struggled. She came in third, behind two horses who did not place in the top five in the Kentucky Derby. Secret Oath’s trainer revealed that she was exhausted as the race progressed.

Simplification

Simplification finished fourth in the Kentucky Derby, behind Rich Strike, Epicenter, and Zandon. Simplification won the Fountain of Youth Stakes after finishing third in the Florida Derby. He’s only run one race outside of Florida, but after a great finish at the Run for the Roses, he has a lot of potential.

What time is the Preakness Stakes?

The Preakness Stakes will be the second-to-last race of an all-day program that will feature 14 races. The actual Preakness race is scheduled to begin at approximately 6:50 p.m. ET.

Where can I watch the Preakness Stakes 2022?

This year’s race will be livestreamed on a number of NBC-affiliated networks. CNBC will broadcast the first round of coverage from 2-4 p.m. EST. The program then changes to NBC from 4 PM ET till the end. However, racing coverage and analysis will be available on NBCSports.com, the NBC Sports app, and Peacock throughout the day of the event.

How long is the Preakness Stakes distance?

Pimlico Race Course is a mile in circumference, or 9.5 furlongs in horse racing terms. The Preakness Stakes lasts slightly under two minutes, similar to the Kentucky Derby, which takes place two weeks previously. That’s understandable given that the race features the top horses and jockeys in the sport and is just slightly shorter than the Kentucky Derby.

Because the Belmont Park racetrack measures a mile and a half in circumference, the Belmont Stakes is by far the longest race in the Triple Crown.

Preakness Stakes best times

Secretariat, the renowned Triple Crown-winning horse, set the record for the fastest Preakness time in 1973. In one minute and 53 seconds, he won the race that year.
